The Thaipusam Hindu festival is celebrated in worship of Lord Murugan through offerings of pain and self sacrifice. Traditionally a male representing his whole family carries milk pots attached to his body by hooks along a long walk to the temple.   The carrier may fast and meditate for days to prepare for this ritual, and is accompanied along the way by friends and family. The kavadi can weigh up to 20 kilograms and are decorated with peacock feathers and images of Hindu deities. He may also wear spiked sandals. 02/07/2012
